Woman’s National Democratic Club

December 3, 2015 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm

To provide perspective on today’s unfinished gender role revolution, Dr. Carol S. Pearson will share insights from an ancient Greek initiation rite that was the most honored mystery tradition of its time and discuss how its archetypal patterns can be seen in contemporary women’s behaviors and choices, popular literature and film, and our politically paralyzing culture wars. The Eleusinian Mysteries honored the ideal of supportive and equal gender partnership and were forerunners to the liberation and self-help movements of our time. Applying narrative intelligence to understanding the rite’s sacred story, she will offer tangible lessons that are applicable to our own situations today. One goddess prevails in a power struggle with the chief god, another successfully refuses to submit to mandated either-or choices in order to “have it all” without stress and strain, and powerful male gods learn to respect women’s autonomy and values and to promote their happiness.
